2. As regards paragraph 4 of the enclosed despatch, I am to explain that whereby their Lordships were not informed, in the letter from this Department of the 26th ultimo, that the deposit was made at 80 percent of its nominal value for the purpose; and Mr. Chamberlain understands from the Colonial Treasurer, who is an authority in this country, that this method of calculation was intended as a rough approximation to the bullion value of the coin.
